Artist Statement

My current paintings are about a life long interest in the human subjectivity of perception. I have always been intrigued with the fragility of the world, as I see it, and I am fascinated with the ability of the mind to find new ways of understanding. My new paintings are a dialog about the shattering of the illusion that blocks the nature of reality. To preserve the history of process, numerous glazing techniques are utilized. Each layer records the history of the marks and creates a translucent surface. I am drawn to vibrant colors that communicate a mood. It is through the complexity of making the painting that I find a simplicity that leads me to new realizations.

In 1996 I had a life altering auto accident and, yet again, my world view was reshaped. During the next ten years I devoted myself to the study of Buddhist philosophy and meditation practice. I have been privileged to have studied with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Venerable Ribur Rinpoche, Thich Nhat Hahn and other Buddhist masters. In March of 2008 I took preliminary vows and robes from my dear teacher Khensur Rinpoche Jampa Tegchog. This practice has deepened my understanding of how the mind perceives, and this insight has informed my current work.

In 1983 I received a Bachelor of Fine Art, cum laude, from the University of Denver. My painting’s have been exhibited throughout the United States and are in corporate and private collections.
